Frequently Asked Questions

What types of ceiling insulation are available?

There are several types of ceiling insulation materials, each offering different benefits and suited for specific needs. The most common types include:

  • Batts or Blankets (Fibreglass, Polyester, or Mineral Wool): Fibreglass Batts: The most common form of ceiling insulation, these are made from fine strands of glass. Fibreglass batts are available in pre-cut sections that fit between ceiling joists, offering excellent thermal and acoustic performance.
  • Mineral Wool Batts: Also known as rock wool, mineral wool provides excellent fire resistance in addition to thermal and acoustic properties. It’s ideal for high-fire-risk areas, as it can withstand higher temperatures than other insulation materials.
  • Loose-fill Insulation (Fibreglass, Cellulose, or Mineral Wool): This type of insulation is blown into the ceiling cavity using specialised equipment. Loose-fill insulation is ideal for irregularly shaped spaces or areas with hard-to-reach corners. It provides effective thermal and acoustic insulation and is often used in both retrofitting and new builds.
  • Cellulose: Made from recycled paper products, this type of insulation is eco-friendly and provides a high R-value (thermal resistance).
  • Reflective or Foil Insulation: Made from a reflective aluminum foil, this insulation works by reflecting heat away from the interior of the building. It’s especially effective in hot climates where cooling is important. It is commonly used in areas like attics or ceilings in warmer regions.
